N.Z. firm on Games
NZPA • Washington The Minister of Foreign Affairs (Mr Taiboys) yesterday told the American Secretary of State (Mr Cyrus Vance) that the New Zealand Government would not direct its sportsmen to boycott the Moscow Olympics. However, he reiterated that his Government would welcome a change of venue for the Games.
Mr Taiboys met Mr Vance on the first day of a week-long visit to Washington. The main purpose of his trip is to attend a meeting of the A.N.Z.U.S. council, which will start today.
It is believed in Wash-
ington that the Americans may bring up the Olympic question again during the A.N.Z.U.S. meeting.
America’s other A.N.Z.U.S. partner, Australia, appears to have taken a harder line than New Zealand with its national Olympic committee, and United States officials would like to see the New Zealand Government go further. The Carter Administration may seek the inclusion of a strong reference to the Games in the final A.N.Z.U.S. communique — if only to put more pressure on the New Zealand Olympic national committee.
