Swedish pigmeats cleared
Wellington reporter
The suggestion that diseased pig meats are being imported from Sweden has been dismissed by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr Maclntyre).
Concern about New Zealand imports had come after a reported identification of vesicular stomatitis in Swedish pigs imported by Taiwan, he said.
However, Swedish veterinary authorities had confirmed that Sweden remained free from either vesicular stomatitis or swine vesicular disease.
Mr Maclntyre said permits for about 62 tonnes of Swedish pigmeat had been issued since August, 1979. The strictest precautions had been observed to obtain a quality product.
