Compensation move for cattle farmers

Wellington reporter Farmers selling tubercu--1 o s i s “movement-con-trolled”. cattle in the paddock will be compensated for any discount incurred because of the control, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

This compensation is already paid to farmers selling “movement-controlled” animals at auction sales. The monitoring of auction sales in 1978, after tuberculosis “movement control” was introduced, showed that the values of controlled store and beef cattle were being discounted by comparison

with equivalent free-mov-ing cattle. The same has been found to be true for cattle sold in the paddock. Compensation will be paid on animals sold at a discount in the paddock since January 1. 1980. Payments will be made on the basis of the actual amount of discounting, up to a maximum set on the recommendation of the Anima! Health Advisory Committee. Rates will be reviewed every six months. Farmers who believe they are eligible for compensation should approach their nearest Office of the Ministry.
