Owner sought after dog dies of starvation

Widespread inquiries are under. way to trace the owner of a dog which starved to death while tied to a fence at Belfast. The dog, a German Shepherd cross, had been tied by its collar to the fourth strand of a wire fence near the Belfast Hotel for almost two weeks. “It was a disgusting case of cruelty. The ani- . mal was tied so tightly that it could not even lie down or move more than a i few centimetres along : the ■■wire,” said Mr J. ! Crawford, a Christchurch 'City. Council dog control officer.

Mr Crawford said he had called by a member of the public, but had found the dog dead when he went to investigate. He said the owner of the paddock lived some distance away, and had known nothing of the dog’s plight The dog’s collar bore a 1976-77 Ellesmere County registration — 0968. If found, the person who had tied up the dog would be prosecuted by the Ministry of Agriculture under the • Animals Protection Act, said a spokesman for the Ministry yesterday.
