Concern over gasworks
An Ashburton engineering firm has expressed concern over'the pending closing of the Greymouth gasworks. In a letter to the Greymouth Borough Council last night, Mr M. J. .Rushton, of Rushton Engineering Co Ltd, said “we have used Greymouth coke in our foundry over the last two years and have found it superior to anything else available in the South Island.” “If Greymouth coke were to become unavailable, it would have a disastrous effect, as our .whole operation hinges around a coke-fired cupola blast furnace which is more economical than any other type of furnace.” Mr .Rushton said his was a.. new foundry business, which was expanding, as was its .-.coke usage. He asked if the. council had considered the production of a hard-type foundry coke, with .the gas a by-product, “as there must be other.; foundries in the same position as ourselves. • The. council received : the letter and discussed it further in committee.
