Fares up on Monday

Passengers on several Christchurch Transport Board bus services will from Monday have to dig deeper into their pockets to pay their fares.

Rising fuel costs and increased staff wages have resulted in a fare increase of 14.7 per cent, to take effect from March 3. The increase represents an average rise of 3.8 c per trip. The adult fare for a trip of up to one section will remain at 20. The fare for trips between one and five sections will increase 5c to 35c, and trips of over five sections also will rise 5c to 45c. cards for journeys of up . to one section are unchanged. Concession cards for 10 trips between one and five section will increase from $2.70 to $3.15; and for 10 trips over five sections the concession fare rises 45c to $4.05. Concession cards for 20 adult trips or 40 trips by school pupils rise from $4.80 to $5.60 for one to five sections, and from $6.40 to $7.20 for trips of more than five sections.

The “sanitarium” fare from Dyers Pass Road to Coronation Hospital remains at 20c, but the fare to the middle and

upper parts rises 5c to 35c. The “Seaside Special” will cost 5c more — 35 cents. Monthly passes for trips within the board’s district rise from $l4 to $l6, and for trips both inside and outside the district the monthly pass will rise from $2l to $23, Fares which remain unchanged include flat charges for luggage, freight, prams and pushchairs; and surcharges for trips beginning or ending outside the board’s district.

Concession cards, sold at the present prices would remain valid after March' 3, said the board's general manager (Mr M. G. Taylor).
