Close diving
Three of the six titles decided on the first day of the New Zealand age-group diving championships at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday - were not won until the last dive.
Only 2.31 points separated David’ van der Zwan (Manawatu) and Raymond Vallance (Nelson-Marlborough) in the boys 15, 16 and 17 years one metre springboard. Two Nelson-Marlborough girls — Susan Stewart and Alison Newman — had only 4.83 points between them in the girls 13 and 14 years three-metre springboard, and Sally Lindberg (Auckland) and Haumea Hebenstreit (Otago) fought a dogged battle in the girls 15, 16 and 17 years one metre before Miss Lindberg emerged 8.25 points clear.
The most impressive group of divers were three in the girls 12 years and
under-one-metre. They all performed exceptionally well, and the winner, Katie Con.' nors . (Auckland) showed excellent technique and temperament.
