Skating award

An Auckland artistic skater has won the New Zealand Ice Skating Association’s “Sportsman of the Year” award. Denyse Adam became the first North Island skater to be accorded that honour. After finishing runner-up In the 1978 intermediate women’s national championship, Miss Adam competed in a junior international event in Italy early last year.

However, Kathy Lindsay (Invercargill), who had beaten Miss Adam for the national title, was preferred to her for the junior world championships.

But Miss Adam progressed more steadily than Miss Lindsay and was placed seventh of 15 competitors in the Australian junior championship last August. Miss Lindsay was eleventh.

Miss Adam is at present training under an American coach on a full-sized Olympic rink in Sydney and she aims to represent New Zealand at the 1982 world championships.
