China top in world badminton
NZPA-Reuter Singapore
China established itself as the undisputed world badminton champion when it beat its arch-rival, Indonesia, .at the Singapore National Stadium on Saturday.
■ The hero of the Chinese team was Han Jian, aged 23, who scored a sensational win over Indonesia’s all-Eng-land champion, Liem Swie King, in a gruelling three-set duel.
The predominantly Chinese crowd of 7000 gave full-throated support to Han Jian as he matched the Indonesian star not only in skill but also in a cool display of nerves.
Han Jian was trailing two points behind Liem after forcing a deuce at 13-all in the deciding third set, but he came back into the match with a tremendous spurt of speed, and power that surprised the Indonesian champion. Thunderous applause
greeted the 15-11, 4-15, 18-17 triumph of Han Jian.
