British migrants
Sir, —Your . correspondent, D. White (February 22), bemoans that the 1950 influx of British migrants did nothing to enrich New Zealand’s life-style. Being one such migrant I was, under the immigration • contract, compelled to labour in a forestry camp for a period of two years — work which no sane Kiwi would undertake. ' ’I found myself overmy • years in New. Zealand, unable ,-to raise-the Kiwi standards A ( to- European levels, so had • to \dfop /mine to -suit the parochial conditions, extant in .“Godzone.” — Yours, ’. ( JAMES .J.' much correspondance with Mr Harward but his own point of view is invincible. He is, moreover, the only member of the N.Z.I.F. who has disputed my activities. In reply to Mr Heinekamp may I say that the area being selectively logged over the next 10 years is between 5000 and 6000 hectares; the whole adjoining tract of native forest amounts to more than 400,000 hectares. I did not claim that the Forest Service can improve on nature. In reply to Mr June may I say that I am well aware of the work of Beveridge, Herbert and Nicholls, and I did not claim that logging and replanting are needed to regenerate the forest. — Yours, etc., C. G. R. CHAVASSE. February 18, 1980.
