WHEN TO SOW NEW GRASS

The research work of Dr Stephen Goldson, a scientist with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, has pointed to farmers being able to sow new grass or pasture from mid February onwards. Dr Goldson said recently that as a result of studies of seasonal behaviour of the Argentine stem weevil it seemed that egg laying stopped each year in early Maith, This; was regulated

by day length. On the basis of this, it was possible to sow ryegrass as early as mid February, as by the time the seedlings emerged they would no longer be under heavy egg laying and larval attack. While sowing should not be done earlier than mid February, Dr Goldson said early planting enabled maximum advantage to be taken of autumn' warmth for growth.
