Russian moves in Afghanistan

Sir, — M. Creel’s attempt (February 21) to compare N.A.T.O. with the “friendship treaty”, the .Soviets dictated to one of their previous Afghan puppets is lu-

dicrous. N.A.T.O. troops are in West Germany and other European countries by popular consent expressed through genuinely democratically elected governments. N.A.T.O. is a mutual security pact against aggression from: outside. The terms of the “friendship treaty” are no doubt convenient to Soviet policy but it is irrelevant in circumstances where the Soviet army entered Afghanistan against the will of the Afghan people and the Amin government (which was crushed.as a result), not to repel aggression against Afghanistan but to commit' it, and to install a new puppet, suppress the Afghan rebels, and extend Soviet military influence. “Invasion” is therefore no misnomer, though “rebels” probably is since they fight for an independent Afghan government rather than suffer yet another Soviet stooge regime. — Yours, etc» D. J.- O’ROURKE. February 21, 1980.
