Hawarden fair brings surprise

Looks of amazement were spread over the faces of most farmers at yesterday s Hawarden ewe fair when a pen of five-year Corriedale ewes were knocked down for $36.60. As at last year’s sale, the old ewes receved strong attention from buvers but it certainly’went against the usual order of things when the top price went to a pen of five-year-olds. Bidding for the 336 Corriedales, offered by Timpendean Farm, Ltd (Waikari), started at about $.6 and from the outset two fanners, leaning elbow ® lbo ' v ®,V h ‘ pen rail fought it out withi -0 cent bids before the pen was knocked down to one of them. The sheep wll go to a farm near Rakaia. _ nno** ata Enthusiasm for the 828 a old ewes offered (8890 last year) did not wane. A fair proportion of these sheep sold in the s2a to $32 bracket while most made over $2O. This contrasts with the last sale, when the bulk of the old ewes were $l4 to $15.53, with a top price of $20.40, set by J. K. Forrester (Hawarden). Timpendean’s top price last year was $2O/20. All the adult ewes were in excellent order, and because of the good condition of most mouths offered an investment of up to three years. As the good prices would indicate the quality of the adult ewes yesterday was generally higher than those offered at the Amberley fair earlier this week. The interest in the 6749 (0500 last year) two-tooths was not as strong and values, although higher due to better quality sheep, were about the same as those at the Amberley fair. Only the top-priced pens showed a slight increase in value over the Amberley sale. The best two-tooth price was $35.20 for a pen of 80 from R. J. and R. L. Warwick (Gendochart). The same vendor sold 80 at $32.20 and 67 at $2B. Last year the best price was $35 for sheep from the same vendor. Whle the top price only Improved slightly, generally twotooths increased in vaue by $4 to $5. Most pens sold between $25 and $3O while last year values generally ranged from $2l to $25. Tussock two-tooths were $lB-$2O last year and $20.80 to $24.40 this year. R. L. Brooker (Haddon) was among the top vendors with sales ranging from $25.20 to $31.80 for 275 ewes. E. J. Millar and Co. (Allandale) won the Clifton Cup for a pen of 97 which later sold for $32.40. The remaining 151 in his offering were sold for $29.20 to $3O.
