Family day
■March 1 will be family ‘day as well as fishing time at the Waimakariri River mouth. About 11 a.m. an area on the beach will be fenced off for a children’s Big Dig. Five hundred discs will be the target for the treasure seekers, who will exchange them for prizes. A bathing beauty contest for the under 20s at 2 p.m. will be judged by representatives of the Belda modelling school. Another for children under five will follow. Both will award cash prizes to the first three places. The Kaiapoi judo club will be selling hot dogs
and soft drinks and morning and afternoon tea will be available in the Waimakariri yacht clubhouse. The Pines and Kairaki auxiliary fire service unit will. be selling a'pproprately worded contest tee-shirts in six sizes from children’s to adults’. It is hoped a community group will be handling barbecue foods. The Waimak-Ashley Lifeboat' Institute will be assisting at both sides of the river mouth. The Pegasus surf club will have a boat on standby for emergencies and will also seek to boost its funds with boat trips from the public.boat ramp.
