Hospital laundry fire quelled

Firemen were able to quell a fire in the Christchurch Hospital’s laundry room last evening. The blaze broke out about 6.20 p.m. among washing in a sorting room on the second floor of the St Asaph Street building. The room is used to sort clothing and bedding from several Christchurch hospital. Firemen had to use breathing apparatus because. of heavy smoke, but were able to prevent the spread of the fire. A quantity of clothing and sheets was destroyed but the fire, which is being investigated by firesafety officers, did not cause any serious structural damage. Six engines and three Fire Service control cars answered the call. The last did not leave the scene until 8.20 p.m.
