Fewer armed robberies in Chch
The number of armed robberies in Christchurch fell sharply last year, according tb a survey by Armoured Freightways Ltd. ■ Robberies in the city decreased by 34 per cent from 1978 to 1979, in Contrast to a 125 per cent increase in Auckland and a 6.5 per cent increase in Wellington. According to the survey, New Zealanders are most likely to be robbed or “mugged” in the streets. Private homes are the next most popular target of robbers, followed by shops, motels, hotels, post office's, banks, and chemists’ shops.
The total amount stolen in robberies throughout New Zealand last year increased by 63 per cent from 1978. However, the survey found, this was entirely a result of a payroll robbery in Auckland in February, 1979, in which more than $278,000 was stolen.
The use of firearms in armed robberies increased only slightly in the two-year period, as did the use of knives, the survey said.
