Talks on improving Tasman trade

Trade between New Zealand and Australia was likely to expand in the future, the Under-Secretary of Trade and Industry (Mr Allen) has said. Mr Allen was speaking at the opening of a joint meeting in Christchurch between representatives of the Standards Association of New Zealand and the Standards Association of Australia. The associations would have an important role in closer trading ties across the Tasman, he said. More uniform standards would promote trade. The object of the two-day meeting was to develop a

system of standards that could be used by manufacturers in both countries, said the director of the New Zea--1 land association (Mr D. R. M. Pinfold). It also aimed to identify specific areas in which joint standards were needed to further trade. Ms R. S. Ashton, the head of the New Zealand association’s publishing and publicity department, said one of the biggest difficulties in establishing joint standards • was cost. Committees would have representatives from ' both sides of the Tasman, and travelling expenses would be high, she said.
