Control spillage at dams
The Ministry of Energy is allowing water to spill over three hydro-electric dams in the South Island Water was being discharged from Lakes Benmore, Aviemore, and Waitaki the duty supervisor at the Islington control centre of the New Zealand Electricity Division said last evening. The main reason for the spillage was the recent heavy rains in the catchment areas. Several lakes were above maximum levels. Christmas was also a time when there was a low de:mand for electricity, he said. ! "This is the lowest load : period because people are on holiday and factories are shut. It happens every year,” he said. About 1200 cumecs of water a second are being spilled over the dams. The spillage will last for 72 hours.
