Christmas spirit
Sir. — There is a mood of anger and cynicism about the way we celebrate Christmas. How can we be merry and happy this Christmas when so many are enslaved bv economic, social or political tyranny. Against the news of air disasters, earthquakes, wars and starving refugees, the Christmas mes- ’
sage seems unreal. How w» would like to shoot from the sky those wretched angels with their tidings of good news. But if we silence the good news what remains is the bad news of social disintegration, hate, suffering, sin and death. May the babe of Bethlehem awaken our minds to the reality of the love of God; then we shall be freed from the horrible cynicism which stops us from hearing the news of wonderful hope and salvation for the human race. — Yours, etc., G. A. LEICESTER. December 21, 1979.
