Turn-round time in N.Z. improves
I Bv ail standards, the year' ended September 30 was one of notable improvement in turn-! round for all classes of overseas ships on the New Zealand: waterfront, according to the: Waterfront Industry Commis-! sion. In a report just released the commission notes that cargo quantities hate substantially increased and that productivity — as measured by gross days on the coast, tonnes per ship-day worked, and container handling rates — “is significantly improved over all previous years.” There was an increase in conventional shipping in the 197879 year, although the volume of activity was still considerably lower than in the years immediately before 1977-78. The number of voyages increased and the total cargo handled was up 260,000 tonnes to 2.6 million tonnes. For individual trades, the most notable improvement in 1978-79 was an: increase of almost 280.000 tonnes! of cargo handled for the East Asia and Japan trade. The average stay of a conventional ship during the year was 15.02 days, compared with 16.62 days in 1977-78. The 15.02 figure is the lowest since statistics in the present format were first taken in 1971 and was achieved because the increase in average: cargo quantities in 1978-79 was' more than offset by a 15.7 per cent increase in daily cargo I throughput.
