Warning to retailers

Wellington reporter t The police are concerned that retailers are not making full use of late-banking facilities over the ChristmasNew Year and Easter holidays. The police crime prevention officer for New Zealand I Senior-Sergeant T. Mortensen i said it seemed pointless where the hanks provided this useful free service that more traders did not take advantage of it.

“We strongly advise al! traders to make use of the ‘after hours’ banking facilities, particularly at times when their takings are up,” he said. “Retailers leaving cash on their premises over the holiday period are encouraging crime. Those taking money home with them are merely shifting the place of risk and putting their homes and families in danger.” Senior-Sergeant Mortensen

said statistics showed a drop in the use of late-banking facilities in 1978 from their peak in 1977. Ironically, main trading areas such as Auckland. Wellington, and Christchurch were, on percentage, lower users of the system while some smaller centres were higher users. In 1978. the greatest number of lodge-: ments, greater even than in Auckland, was made in Blenheim.
