Caves road a bad joke—bus drivers
PA Hamilton The Hangrtiki-Waitomo Caves road has become a bad joke among tour bus drivers, according to a bus company manager. The operations manager of Newmans Coach Tours, Ltd (Mr P. O’Ryan), said the road was breaking up and if something was not done to improve it, it would be a bad advertisement for New Zealand. Mr O’Ryan was commenting on the National Roads Board's deferral of spending $200,000 to rebuild the road. The road was bad and too narrow in many places
for big coaches, he said. A daily average of 27 tour buses use the road, which links the Otoro-hanga-Te Kuiti Road to the caves, and during the peak tourist season 65 buses a day use it. The Waitomo manager of the Tourist Hotel Corporation (Mr D. Stewart 1 said he had heard several complaints about the state of the road from bus drivers. He said he did not know if any drivers had refused to drive buses on the road, but believed some drivers were considering such action.
