PA Wellingtor Two men unlawfully tool a 5650.000 locomotive frorr the railway yards in Wei dihgton for joy-rides on twe (occasions, the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington was (told on Christmas Eve. ( Hugh McColl, aged 21. a computer engineer, ant (Micklos Bizzo. aged 17, i laminator. both pleadet guilty to two charges tha> unlawfully and without colour of right but not so as tc be guilty of theft they tool a locomotive, the property of the New Zealand Rail ways. A further charge of thef of overalls, a jacket, and i hat to a total value of $3( from the Railways was with drawn by the prosecution. Mr W. M. Willis. S.M., re manded them to January 2' (for sentence. Prosecuting, Sergeant F I Wood said that at 2 a.m. or (December 16 the defendant (went to the Wellington rail
way yards where they boarded a locomotive and managed to start it. They drove about 400 metres along the line until thev came to the first set of points, which were showing red. They asked train control to open the points but the I latter became auspicious and i the defendants ran away. 1 They returned to the :;yardc on a subsequent occasion after having taken cloi thing from a Railways office : and again boarded a locomotive which they drove some •1400 metres to the first set of points. t. They again asked train i control to clear the line. The ) police were called. In explanation, the defendants said they had driven the locomotive "just for I fun.” Asked how far they would . have gone, they said thev i 1 would have carried on as si long as the signal remained ■'green.
