Women in fire brigades
Sir, —Although I agree with Laura Cairns (November 28) that women like Sonja Davies, in pushing unreasonable projects such as demanding that women be accepted as fire-fighters are stirring up antagonism, on the other hand, women rose to the occasion during the war when men were overseas fighting for our freedom. We lived on the West Coast and one could not but admire the extremely competent manner in which women took over the firefighting. With ail the unrest in the world today it would be a distinct advantage to have women trained to handle the modern equipment should they again be called upon to shoulder the full responsibility of fighting the complicated fires which chemicals make a hazardous and arduous task. To be prepared for any eventuality would pay dividends should the need arise.—Yours, etc., L. E. REID. November 29, 1979.
