Yir Tiz beats Summer Haze
Special Correspondent ! Auckland With honours even, a third meeting between the out-, standing two-year-old fillies,: Yir Tiz and Summer Haze, 1 is likely to eventuate in the Avondale Stakes on December 15. Summer Haze, from Stratford, won the first time they met, with Yir Tiz six; lengths away, third. Yir Tiz turned the tables in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie yesterday. Ridden bv Warwick Robinson, Yir Tiz scored by a length and t.hree-auarters from Summer Haze after the southern filly had turned for home about half a length in front of her rival. Third, two lengths awav. was Ring The Bell. Bright Star was further back, fourth, well clear of the only other runner, O’Seas. Yir Tfe ran the 1100 m in Imin 5.095. the best timed electronically in New Zealand for this odd distance. Sabre Prince (Imin 5.335) was the record-holder. Summer Haze was a fraction slow but she was scon up on the outside of Yir Tiz, which began the quickest. From then until the home turn, Robinson on Yir Tiz. allowed the other filly no more than half a length. i “You set the terms,” G. A. I Rogerson. Yir Tiz’s trainer, had told his rider before the 1 race — and Robinson was [obliging. Whereas Summer Haze had streaked away in her 'previous five races, this time she could not shake off Yir Tiz. It was apparent fairly early in the run home that she was under unaccustomed pressure. Yir Tiz gradually got the upper hand and over the last 200 m forged ahead to record her sixth straight win. “You’re lucky she’s not fit,” quipped Robinson to Summer Haze’s rider, Greg
Childs, as they pulled up their mounts. Indeed, Yir Tiz was blow-: ing quite noticeably as 1 she returned to scale. Rogerson being quick to explain that she had been back in work for only six days after being given a let-up after her Riccarton trip. Neither Childs nor Summer Haze’s trainer. R. J. Bothwell, offered any excuse; for her defeat. Childs’ wa.»| happv with the way she handled the right-hand wav; round for the first time. “But she didn't feel quite; as good as usual,” he said. I “Mind you. that could have been because she was put; (under pressure.” Bothwell said she prob-; ;ably would be back for (Avondale. “It will depend on; her.” he said. I Rogerson can take the : credit for buying Yir Tiz, as ! well as training her. He bought her at a Waikato : yearling sale for $2BOO, then [found owners for her. ' The lucky owners are ! Messrs W. G. Chaplin, R. J. ■ Hewitt, B. J. Weal, and Mrs| H. Anderson for whom Yir (Tiz has earned almost 1 AS earned almost ($12,000 in stakes.
