Panamint expected to race well
(NZPA Melbourne ! All eyes will be on Panlamint at Flemington today. This year’s Adelaide Cup {winner is topweight with 163.5 kg in the Nightmarch ! Welter (1600 m Bart Cummings will be at {Flemington to watch the sixi year-old’s progress toyards (a Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup run. “Midge” Didham will ride Panamint. Didham has ridden the horse once before. He finished second on him in last year’s Underwood Stakes (1984 m at Caulfield behind So Called. Cummings said Panamint had pleased him since coming to Melbourne. “I will know more after today, but at this stage he will probably have his next run in the Toorak Handicap,” said , Cummings. Panamint carried topweight of 56kg in last year’s Melbourne Cup, and finished tenth behind Arwon. The Irish-bred stayer has ; 55.5 kg in both cups this Ivear.
Panamint was troubled with a back injury when last in Melbourne. However, in Adelaide in May he showed his true ability by winning the Adelaide Cup (3200 m carrying 53kg. At his only run since, the horse was a fast-finishing third at W.F.A. behind Court Sabre and Atropine over 1350 m at Cheltenham on September 1.
Second favourite today is New Zealander Karu, third in last year’s Melbourne Cup. Karu is having his fifth start since a spell. He won the Kilmore Cup (2020 m with 54kg on September 19, beating Evander a Moonee Valley winner last Saturday.
