Slips but no floods on Coast
Greymouth reporter Warm sunshine returned to the West Coast yesterday .itternoon after fiood warnings were broadcast on Sundav evening. Heavy rain fell overnight in parts of the Coast, but .the front passed with little effect, and moved on to /Cook Strait last night. A small slip closed State Highway 6 in the Fox Hills between Franz Josef and Fox Glacier overnight, but Ministry of Works staff had it cleared by mid-morning Another slip further south at the Gates of Haast also was cleared, although heavy rain fell there in the morning. In Greymouth po flooding was reported and the Mayor of Grey mouth (Mr O. H. Jackson) said that experimental drainage work near Victoria Park appeared fo have worked satisfactorily. The meteorological office at Hokitika received reports of 187 mm of ram at Fox Glacier, 182 mm at Franz Josef and 175 mm at Otira in the 24 hours to 9 a.m. yesterday. Only 31mm was recorded at Hokitika. 20mm at Greymouth, and the Westland Catchment Board’s rain gauge recorded 43mm.
