Mrs Shona Arnold, of Shirley, said she was feeling no ill effects, but she was trying to reduce her smoking. Even cooking meals for her son aged seven, had not tempted her to give up her protest.
Mrs Arnold said she had ■eceived many calls from other beneficiaries yesterday, all of them supporting her protest against cuts of $l6 a iortnight in her basic benefit and about $6 in supplementary grants.
A statement by the Minister of Social Welfare (Mr Gair) calling on her to reconsider what she was doing drew some fire from Mrs Arnold. She sent a telegram to the Minister, saying: “$l6 a fortnight, cut too drastic. You rethink again.”
