Challenge will be made
Canterbury would defini-, tely issue a challenge for! the Ranfurly Shield next] winter, said "the chairman of the Canterbury union, Mr R. ; W. Thomas, yesterday. “And, given the good rela- i lions that exist between < Auckland and Canterbury — especially on shield chai- ; lenges — I am confident < that our challenge will be ’ accepted,” said Mr Thomas, i Mr Thomas said he had 1
.been talking to his Auckland I counterpart, Mr Ron Don, on [another matter yesterday morning and he had suggested that Canterbury might be given the first challenge. Mr Don was noncommittal. Canterbury will probably play Auckland in the course of 'a two-match tour next winter, it is also due to meet North Auckland away. If past patterns are main-
tained this tour could be in late August or early September, which could give it one of the early challenges. Auckland is likely to begin its shield programme against one or two of the weaker provinces, as is customary for any holder, so Canterbury must have a good chance of getting its first tilt at the shield for eight years.
