AUCKLAND University has its own version of Jack’s beanstalk: a 30m bamboo that grows smm an hour in the spring. The giant bamboo is part of the university’s big' collection of rare and unusual plants and trees. Since 1970 it has produced eight stems each 30m tall, the bamboo’s full height. The bamboo is of Chinese origin and the specimen at the university, which is planted outside the boiler room, is the biggest in New Zealand.
