Hay pollution
Tonnes of sewage released by an explosion at a treat-[’ ment plant threatened San! Francisco Bay from a new direction yesterday while a devastating spill continued in the southern end of the bay. The new spill began on Wednesday at a sewagetreatment plant in Martinez, about 48km north-east of San Francisco. An estimated 180 million litres of par- 1 tially-treated sewage spilled into the Suisun Bay tributary, which empties into San Pablo Bay, which in turn meets San Francisco Bay. To the south, a 4-week-old breakdown at the San JoseSanta Clara treatment plant . has spilled billions of litres of sewage into the southern end of the bay. — San Francisco.
