Attorney-General appearance
Sir, — It could be said that the law-makers and the judiciary kissed when Mr McLay appeared as Crown Prosecutor in Rotorua last week. However, I did hope for something a bit more positive from Mr McLay in his submissions concerning sentence. The public should know that the nature and length of the sentences imposed will induce those offenders to commit serious offences all over again. I resent paying taxes for an unimaginative and negative penal policy that continues to make recidivists. I also question the assumption that deterrent sentences actually deter. — Yours, etc., KEVIN FOLEY. September 30, 1979.
