Drug blame
The Japanese Government and three companies have agreed that an anti-diarrhoea drug caused blindness and paralysis, and have accepted responsibility for the victims. An agreement signed by the State and the companies will be used to settle court battles that have been going on for up to eight years over multi-million dollar damage claims involving about 4000 victims. Several courts have found that a chemical called Quinoform contained in the anti-diar-orhea drug was the cause of S.M.O.N. disease (subacute-mvelo-optico neuropathy). The courts said the State, without confirming the safety of the drug, had allowed Quinoform’s production and distribution. Pro* duction was suspended m 1970. — Tokyo.
