'No report' of drug’s side-effects

PA Wellington No case of a daughter of a woman treated with the drug, stilboestrol, developing vaginal carcinoma is known to have been reported in New- Zealand, the Minister of Health (Mr Gair) has told Parliament. “I am advised that for some years now pregnant women would not have been treated with stilboestrol,” he said. He w't. replying to Mr C. R. Marshall (Labour, Wanganui), who had asked if, in view of reports of a successful law’ suit overseas against the manufacturers of the drug, Mr Gai’ - could say to what extent the drug had been used in New Zealand. Mr Gair said stilboestrol had been the treatment of choice in pregnant women for threatened abortion in the 19505. The drug had been used in New Zealand but statistics were not available on the extent of its use at that time. It had later been reported overseas that some of the children of the treated women had developed vaginal carcinoma and that this had been attributed by some authors to stilboestrol therapy. But no cases were known to have been reported in New Zealand.
