“Follyland”
Sir, — Anthony Burgess in his book “1985.” which is a criticism of Orwell’s “1984” and an updating of the book in the light of present developments, shows an England that is brought to her knees by the trade unions, and is subsequently mortgaged to the Arabs. No longer is Big Brother watching you — it is the T.U.C., and England is referred to as “Tucland.” Perhaps Godzone should be renamed “Folland” in the light of developments here. Knox wants to knock over employers one by one, Kelly says the employers know what to expect if they don’t play ball, Cameron wants to educate workers not wanting to strike, and Andersen has lots of black bans lined up. Add to that the bleatings of Rowling and his fellow F.O.L. puppets, and “Follyland” may seem to be quite an appropriate alternative to Godzone. — Yours, etc., M. A. BERTRAM. September 26, 1979,
