Marriage
Sir, — I have no quarrel ■with Bruce McFarlane (August 25), with his church, whichever one of many it may be, or with his personal truths, since by great good fortune in this particular corner of the globe right now there is no church with the ecclesiastical or political muscle to force “truth” of any sort upon anyone. A review of the last 2000 years, indeed, a review of the last 6000 years, shows how fortunate are we all, including Mr McFarlane, to be free of the High Priests. But, having no quarrel, I do have a couple of questions: A shared God is certainly a foundation, but is it not a wee bit enthusiastic to say that “the” God is “the only” foundation? And, more fundamentally, under what circumstances has it ever been possible to speak with a straight, face of a “sound Christian consensus”? — Yours, fete.. KEN MCALLISTER. August 25, 1979.
