Pony club trophy
The Springston Trophy, a major pony club event run by the Marlborough Pony Club at Blenheim, was won by the Kaikoura club.
The winning team was Shane Higgs (Ringo), Brendon Smith (Bacardi Rum), Virginia Mackie (Sir Galahad), Jackie Blunt (Catkin). Kim Baynton (Katie) and Averil Wareham (Golden Wings).
Thirty-four teams from many parts of the South Island took part. There were 204 ponies in the contest.
Results: Kaikoura 1, Kaiapoi 2, Hawarden-Waikari 3, Rangiora 4, Windsor 5, Glencoe 6.
The competition for riders 16 years of age and younger will be held next year at Geraldine.
