Alen wins

NZPA Helsinki Markku Alen, of Finland, won the rally of the 1000 lakes, completing the 1450 km course 1 min 31s ahead of his fellow countryman, Ari Vatanen.

The route included 450 kilometres containing 45 special tests, many on stretches of rural road. It was Alen’s third successive win in this rugged Finnish event, which counts towards the world rally title. Third place went to Bjoern Waldegaard, of Sweden, whose performance puts him at the head of the world standings. He now has 83 points, eight more than the Finnish rally ace, Hannu Mikkola, who was forced to withdraw with engine trouble before the halfway mark. Blair Robson, of New Zealand, is placed ninth in the world championship, but did not compete in the Finnish rally.
