Nicaraguan situation
Sir, — It is disturbing that in the month since the overthrow of the Somoza Government in Nicaragua, news about that country has been minimal. It is now that Nicaragua faces its greatest problems with 40,000 dead, 800,000 homeless and 50 per cent of industry destroyed > — all in a country with a population of only 2.5 M. It is for this reason that Corso, Christian World Service of the National Council of Churches, and the Catholic Commission for Justice and Development have jointly mounted an emergency appeal for Nicaragua to assist the relief and reconstruction of the country. Perhaps the recent silence on Nicaragua supports the Third World claim that the Western news media only want to hear about these countries when there is a major disaster and are not concerned about the day-to-day hunger and suffering in countries such as Nicaragua. — Yours, etc., L. E. AND T. A. JACKSON. August 27, 1979.
