Nitrogen fertiliser

Sir, — After reading yet another account of Professor Walker’s views on nitrogen fertiliser (“The, Press,” August 17), I feel that during the period that Professor Walker has been speaking out against the urea plant he seems to have lost sight of the important benefits that result from the use of chemical nitrogen fertilisers. In horticulture, in cropping and in forage farming the benefits are real and likely to continue. Nor have I ever seen Professor Walker discuss the major deficiencies of the clover-ryegrass-animal system for biological nitrogen fixation. It is these deficiencies that have prompted the increased use of chemical nitrogen, and they will not disappear overnight. — Yours, etc., DR W. D. SUTTON, Palmerston North. August 18, 1979.
