Escaper caught in drugs swoop
NZPA-Reuter Dublin An alleged Irish guerrilla who escaped from Custody in Belfast eight years ago was among three people arrested during a drugs swoop in the Irish Republic yesterday, police sources have said. They said the man, James McCann, was expected to be charged with illegal possessions of drugs and weapons. Two other men arrested with him had already been charged with the same offences. The police arrested the three on Sunday and seized almost half a tonne of mari-
juana, worth about S2M on the streets, from a lorry. McCann, aged 37, escaped from custody in Belfast in 1971 while awaiting trial for suspected Irish Republican Army bombings. The West German authorities had been seeking McCann for questioning in connection with' bomb explosions at thp British Rhine Army headquarters in 1976. He has in the past denied being a member of the 1.R.A., and the guerrilla organisation said yesterday that it was not involved in drugs in any way.
