Chch role disputed
Christchurch City Council involvement in a proposed study group of Rolleston was questioned by Cr A. Y. Shuker at a Paparua County town planning meeting last evening. After a recent meeting of staff representatives of the Regional Planning Authority, the Ellesmere and Paparua County Councils, the Christchurch City Council and the Ministry o’f Works, it was recommended that a study group look at the status of Rolleston within the draft of the regional scheme. The proposed development of Rolleston under the scheme will fall within the boundaries of Paparua and Ellesmere counties. The county planner (Mr K. G. Lawn) said that at the suggestion of the Regional Planning Authority, a City Council planner (Mr M. Brookes) had been invited to I join the study group. The City Council was not financially involved in the group, he said. Cr Shuker said that it was not the person that he objected to, but the title he held. The City Council had never been interested in any previous proposed development of Rolleston. “I am well aware that the Christchurch City Council wants amalgamation of the productive areas of Paparua. They have already thrown away the rural area of the county to the wolves. “Rolleston might look to be a good venture to get their hands on if they get the opportunity," said Cr Shuker. The development of Rolleston would affect the Waimairi, Heathcote, and Riccarton Councils as much as it would the Christchurch City Council. , - Mr Lawn said that it had been a matter of “spreading the net a little wider," and having someone in the group who had been involved iti this type of work. . .
