Gangrene warning
Blanket strings, shawl fringes and nylon threads can cause gangrene in the fingers and toes of tiny children, the “New Zealand Medical Journal” saya in its latest issue. Twisted around a finger a loose thread can act like a tourniquet and cut off the blood flow, according to an article by Dr Linda Mosely, of Middlemore Hospital, Auckland. Toes can be threatened by leotard-like jump suits w-ith integral feet. After
frequent washing, particularly if not turned inside out, threads, hair and lint can accumulate and wind around a baby’s toe. Because of the fine nature of hair, it is sometimes difficult to see when tightly wound around a finger or toe. Nylon threads are particularly hazardous because of their high strength and lack of stretch. In some cases results can be so serious that a finger or toe must be amputated.
