Sales tax on ferries lifted
PA Wellington Ferries capable of carrying more than 40 fare-pay-ing passengers will be exempt from sales tax, the Minister of Customs (Mr Templeton) has said. The Customs Department had reviewed the application of the tax after representations on the matter, and had decided to extend the existing sales tax exemption to passenger vessels. In future, provided the vessel was used exclusively for carrying fare-paying passengers and was permitted by the Ministry of Transport to carry more than 40 passengers, then it would qualify for a remission of sales tax, the Minister said.
