Saudi Arabian women

Sir, — I know it is more likely to arouse the feelings of women’s libbers, but I

would like to hear an official H.A.R.T. view on the fate of women inside Saudi Arabia (“The Press,” August 18). Surely these unfortunate women — there must be many hundreds of thousands of them — deserve some sort of token support when one considers how much press their black brothers in South Africa get. For H.A.R.T. to have any credibility in my eyes then it must come out against all discrimination — colour, religion or sex (is that too much?) and in whatever country it occurs. The parallel with South Africa does not exist regarding sport because we do not often, if ever, meet Saudi Arabians on the playing field, but I would be very interested to know if Saudi Arabia is sending a women’s team to Moscow. — Yours, etc., W. B. MORTLOCK. August 19, 1979.
