Dam death toll rises
NZPA-Reuter Morvi, India The known death toll from the dam burst disaster in the Indian town of Morvi rose to 1124 yesterday as more corpses were recovered from collapsed houses. Relief workers continued to clean up the debris left behind by the devastating floods nine days ago. Thousands of survivors returned home from nearby towns and were being fed from voluntary kitchens. Air Force helicopters continued to drop relief supplies to a few villages inaccessible by road. Many shops and industries reopened after power was restored. The Government is still trying to assess the full damage, but according to preliminary estimates, property and crops worth $122 million were destroyed.
