Sunday play proposal for cricket tests

NZPA Leeds English cricket officials may allow Sunday play in rain-hit tests after the loss of more than 15 hours cricket on the first three days of the third test at Headingley between England and India.

After the second and third days were completely washed out, the players enjoyed the luxury of a rest day. Peter Lush, of the English Test and County Cricket Board, said yesterday: “Obviously we must examine ways of overcoming problems caused by the weather, and Sunday play could be considered.”

The company sponsoring test matches in England has joined the clamour for play on Sundays, which has not previously been allowed. The weather has almost certainly won the test. Only 160 minutes play has been possible, and England has made four for 80 in its first innings. A draw would mean that England will take a 1-0 lead into the fourth and final test, which will start at the Oval, London, on August 30.
