N.Z. swimmers do well

NZPA Fort Lauderdale New Zealand is beginning to make its mark on the swimming world. The young New Zealand team, under the guidance of its coach, Mr Clive Power, who also serves as manager, has set three national records at the Amateur Athletic Union senior long course national championships at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, this week. Melanie Jones, aged 15,

swam the 100 m backstroke in 1:06.43, shaving her old record of 1:06.61. Gary Hurring, aged 17, established a new New Zealand record in the 100 m backstroke while finishing fifth in a strong field. Rickie Binning, aged 15, swam the 200 m breaststroke in 2:41.34 for a new national mark, a fraction under his old time of 2:41.69.

Rebecca Perrott, the Commonwealth record holder in the 200 m freestyle (2:00.6), took eighth place in 2:03.53. She will also swim in the 100 m freestyle and the 200 m individual medley.
