Rugby Three teams did well on the first day of the South Island inter-provincial under-18 rugby tournament at Ashburton yesterday. Otago, Canterbury, and Southland all scored big wins and with Marlborough are the only unbeaten teams after the first day. A heavy Canterbury forward pack dominated Mid-Canterbury, and Canterbury could be the side to beat. Buller and West Coast were outclassed by Otago and Southland. First day results. —Otago 31, Buller 0; Canterbury 25, MidCanterbury 7; Southland 31, .West Coast 0; Marlborough 11, North Otago 10. Southland, last year’s winner, was beaten, 11-3, by Otago on the first day yesterday of the South Island under-16 rugby tournament at Christchurch. Otago led 3-0 at half-time. Canterbury A made a bold start with a big win over South Canterbury. Canterbury was most impressive in the first half and Jed 32-0 at the interval. However, .it could add only one try in the second spell. West Coast played well to hold Canterbury Sub-unions to an eight-point victory. Rules After a thrilling final quarter Canterbury finished more strongly to beat the Queensland schoolboys team by one point in an Australian Rules match on Sunday. Canterbury kicked 14 goals and 15 behinds for its 99 points and Queensland’s 98 points came from 15 goals and eight behinds. The best players for Canterbury were O’Sullivan Kerr, Marshall, and Kenny, while Red«haw, Murphy, Monzon, and West starred for the visitors. In the preliminary game Queensland 120 (16, 24) thrashed Canterbury B 29 (4, 5) by 91 points. The best players were Warren, Appo, and Darling (Queensland), and Durdin, Lush, and Clarkson (Canterbury B).
