Dancing championships
About 2000 Highland dancers from all over New Zealand will meet at Timaru in October to compete in the New Zealand national dancing championships, from October 19 to 22. Record entries have been received for 70 dancing events, which will coincide with the jubilee of the South Canterbury centre of the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand. Timaru was also host for the first national championships in 1967. McKenzie’s
(N.Z.), Ltd, is sponsoring the championships this year and during the week-long competions McKenzie’s staff in Timaru will wear tartan sashes and Timaru dancing groups will give demonstrations in the store. A new division at the championships this year will be one that caters for the more mature dancer. It is the veterans’ division, where those over 25 will compete in the Highland fling and Irish jig-
